Gossypium hirsutum - Country Cotton - Mexican Cotton

Gossypium hirsutum is a species of dicotyledonous plants of the family Malvaceae, subfamily Malvoideae which reaches 60 to 150 cm in height, native to the tropical regions of America. It is the most widely grown species of cotton and provides around 90% of the world's cotton production.

The axis of the stem is green, sometimes reddish, and the leaves have a maximum of five lobes of more or less triangular shape. The petiole and leaves are hairy, and the flowers are white, yellowish or reddish in color. The fruit, 3 to 4 cm long, consists of three to five cells. The oval seeds are used in the production of cottonseed oil and cottonseed meal. The plant is toxic to mammals due to the presence of gossypol in all its organs.
