Jackfruit plant - Whole-leaved Artocarp - Artocarpus Heterophyllus

The jackfruit or jackfruit, Artocarpus heterophyllus, is a species of tree in the Moraceae family, 10 to 15 m high, and cultivated in most tropical regions, in particular for its edible fruits which can reach a weight of between 35 and 50 kg. The species belongs to the same botanical genus as breadfruit, Artocarpus altilis, with which it should not be confused.

The ripe fruit has a mild flavor and a strong, sweet smell, its flesh can be eaten raw or prepared in jam. You can also prepare the green fruit, in a savory dish. The seeds, which are poisonous raw, are edible roasted or boiled.

Advice and maintenance

The jackfruit is a fast grower, plant it in a pierced pot, drained with gravel. It needs rich, cool, humus-rich soil. You need a place where you will find sun, heat and humidity. Mulch and protect young jackfruit from excess moisture.

Possible attacks by certain parasites, mainly in the West Indies, the fungus Rhizopus artocarpi, the jackfruit leaf miner Diaphania caesalis and weevils. Fight preventively with natural insecticides and fungicides.

Upon receipt of your plants, moisten the pot for a few minutes to rehydrate the roots. Plant immediately with or without the pot by inserting it into a suitable hole.
